Cesare Lombroso  Popular
Categoría : Principal / / Caesare Lombroso
Cesare Lombroso was an Italian physician, psychiatrist and pioneer criminologist, who caused a sensation with the publication in 1876 of his book L'uomo delinquente... (Criminal Man). In this work, Lombroso employed Darwinian ideas of evolution to account for criminal behaviour. Measuring the heads of living and executed criminals against the skulls of apes, prehistoric humans and what he and his contemporaries saw as 'primitive' peoples, Lombroso concluded that criminals were in fact victims of atavism.

Alphonse Bertillon  Popular
Categoría : Principal / / Bertillon
In France, statistical reasoning was employed by Alphonse Bertillon (1853-1914), to create a new system of bodily measurement, specifically for identifying criminals. Bertillon was a bureaucrat. The son and brother of physicians with strong interests in the collection and interpretation of medical statistics, he developed and implemented his system while chief of the identification service of the Paris police. It proved most useful. Indeed, the success of the system encouraged him to refine it continually until his death, even though his work met with criticism from authorities such as Francis Galton.

Francis Galton  Popular
Categoría : Principal / / Francis Galton
Francis Galton (1822-1911) was arguably the most respected and influential British scientific advocate of schemes of hereditary improvement in the half-century or so after 1860. His ideas informed thinking about race and national identity in Britain and Australia, between 1860 and 1920. Galton's early life, his wide ranging scientific pursuits between 1844 and the mid-1860s, and his creation of eugenics, the science of improving human heredity characteristics are outlined to provide a comprehensive background about Galton and his influence on the 'science' of statistics.

Adolphe Quetelet  Popular
Categoría : Principal / / Adolphe Quetelet
Adolphe Quetelet (1796-1874) was a gifted Belgian mathematician and astronomer, whose application of statistical reasoning to social phenomena profoundly influenced the course of European social science. The history of the social sciences from the late 1830s onwards is, in large measure, the story of the application and refinement of ideas about the operation of probability in human affairs. These ideas about probability gained widespread currency in intellectual and government circles through the writings of Quetelet.

Thomas Huxley  Popular
Categoría : Principal / / Thomas Huxley
Thomas Henry Huxley was probably Darwin's most ardent champion in the two decades after the publication of the Origin of Species in 1859. He was also one of the first British intellectuals to apply the theory of natural selection to humanity, so as to explain the course of human evolution. By the end of the 1860s, Huxley had become particularly interested in the use of photography as a tool for classifying racial difference. His interest was in all probability stimulated by Francis Galton's experimentation with composite photography.

Good Memory (Marcelo Brodsky)  Popular
Categoría : Principal / Archivos de Autor / Author Archives
When I came back to Argentina after living in Spain for many years, I had just turned forty, and felt the need to work on my identity. Photography, with its precise ability to freeze a point in time, was the tool I used for this purpose. I began going through my family photographs, the ones from my youth, the ones from school. I found our class portrait from first year [eighth grade], taken in 1967, and felt the need to know what had become of each one of my classmates. I decided to hold a 25th reunion of my classmates from the Colegio Nacional de Buenos Aires so that we could see each other again. I invited those I was able to find to my house, and proposed doing a portrait of each of them. I made a huge enlargement of the '67 picture, the flrst one in which we were all together, to serve as a backdrop for the portraits, and asked each classmate to include an element of his or her current life in their portrait. I continued to do portraits of those classmates who did not come to the reunion, but the large photograph could not be moved. I took small copies of it along to include in the portraits I did of those I was able to find. The portraits were done in Buenos Aires, Madrid, Robledo de Chavela (Spain), and New York. Later, a ceremony was organized, in memory of the students of the school who had disappeared or were murdered by state terrorism in the black years of the dictatorship. After twenty years, the school authorities accepted, for the flrst time, that the missing be officially recognized in the school's main hall. It was a historic occasion. I decided to work on the surface of the large photograph that had served as a backdrop for the portraits of my classmates, and to write a few thoughts about each of their lives on the image...

Jewish Heritage  Popular
Categoría : Principal / Archivo Expuesto/Exhibited Archive / Memorial Sites & Archives
What makes up a people's identity? - Its History. What makes up its History? - Sources: documents, books, artifacts - the speechless heritage of the past. And people able to make them speak. After decades of wars, genocide and communist oppression the cultural heritage of the Jewish past in Russia was considered lost. However, that heritage has not disappeared completely: it has been kept in numerous state repositories and in some declined Jewish communities. There is a vital necessity to rescue these remnants of the Jewish heritage from oblivion. In the late 1980s that task appeared utopian for the "Black Years" of the Communist Russia were also marked by the prohibition of Jewish Studies in the USSR. The scholarly exploration of the Jewish past was deprecated during the Soviet era. In 1988 there was almost no one to continue the scholarly achievements of the late nineteenth century historians: Bershadsky, Dubnov, An-sky, and Gessen - the intellectuals of the turn of century who considered collecting, researching and publishing sources of Jewish history a task of paramount importance. The Jewish Historical and Ethnographic Commission, established in St. Petersburg in 1908, launched a variety of projects aimed at gathering and publishing sources of Jewish history. Continued after 1917 for approximately twenty years, those projects brought important results which facilitated research of documentary materials by Western scholars throughout the 20th century. However, since the Chair of Jewish Culture of the Academy of Sciences in Kiev - the last Jewish scholarly institution in the Soviet Union - was closed by the authorities in 1948, there was no systematic research on Jewish history in Russia for some forty years. Nowadays a new generation of Russian scholars is once again developing an interest in Judaic studies, and starting from scratch. The activities of the Jewish Heritage Society commenced in Moscow in 1989. A group of enthusiasts of Jewish history and culture is pursuing the goals defined by the Russian-Jewish historians of the turn of the century. Above all, the Society seeks to collect, to preserve and to share among scholars the "remnants of the remnants" - the documentary heritage of the Jewish past in Eastern Europe.

Video Testimony Pilot Study of Psychiatrically Hospitalized Holocaust Survivors Principal Investigator: Dori Laub, MD, Deputy Director (Trauma Studies), Genocide Studies Program Purpose: The purpose of this research is to systematically assess the effects and potential psychotherapeutic benefits of reconstructing traumatic Holocaust experiences. The reconstruction of the history of personal trauma will be conducted through the creation of a videotaped testimony and a multi-disciplinary analysis of the testimony. This study will test two hypotheses: (1) Is massive psychic trauma related to chronic severe mental illness with psychotic decompensation that leads to either chronic hospitalization or multiple psychiatric hospitalizations? (2) Does a therapeutic intervention such as video testimony that helps build a narrative for the traumatic experience and gives it a coherent expression help in alleviating its symptoms and changing its course? May these changes be attributed to direct intervention (through the occurrence of the testimonial event itself), or through indirect intervention (through the impact on treatment planning, involvement with family members or the survivor community, or the knowledge that the videotaped testimony will be made available to others)?

Global Survey of Group Classification on National ID Cards  Popular
Categoría : Principal /
These entries are compiled primarily from Country Reports of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the U.S. Dept. of State annual Human Rights and Religious Freedom Reports, as well as news reports and from communications with persons holding ID cards. Group classification on a national ID card does not indicate a government will engage in massive human rights violations. Classifications on ID cards are instead a facilitating factor, making it more possible for governments, local authorities or non-state actors such as militias to more readily engage in crimes based on ethnicity or religion. ID cards are not a precondition to genocide, but have been a facilitating factor in the commission of genocide. Additionally the presence of group categories on ID cards, routinely used in official and business transactions, can contribute to polarization that can lead to genocide or related crimes. The survey includes information on more than 30 present and more than 10 past examples (appearing in italics). The legacy of past use of group classification is still a factor in most of these countries

The Absence (Santiago Porter)  Popular
Categoría : Principal / Archivos de Autor / Author Archives
On July 18, 1994, at nine fifty three in the morning, a bomb exploded in front of the building of the Argentine Jewish Mutual Association. The AMIA. In a way, the AMIA was the home of the Jewish community in Buenos Aires. In the building, located in the heart of the city, a whole set of social, cultural and educational activities took place. Inside its walls functioned an employment office, a schooling network, the Center for the Study of Argentine Judaism and the Jewish Science Institute, among other organizations. On that day and hour, the building was crammed with people who were looking for a job, taking care of the paperwork required for a funeral, inquiring about schools for their children, or studying in the library. At the time, hundreds of people were passing in front of the building. The bombing left a balance of 85 persons dead and over 200 injured. The destruction of the building also destroyed the library, probably the most important one on Jewish culture in Latin America. It housed over sixty thousand volumes in Yiddish and Spanish. The bomb and the shock wave affected neighboring buildings, stores and cars. Seven years have passed since that 18th of July and it is still not known who were the material and intellectual authors of the bombing, the most serious one in the history of Argentina. On September 17 the trial that will determine the guilt or innocence of the persons accused of being the terrorist’s local contacts began in Buenos Aires. Twenty people are involved; fifteen of them are policemen. The prosecutor’s office is asking for an indefinite number of years of prison for the five main suspects. They are being tied to the selling and setting up of the car bomb used that morning. It is expected that the trial will raise other issues that have not been clarified: the withholding of information, the manufacturing of evidence, the lack of preparation of the intelligence and security services, and the way the investigation was mishandled. All this is related to the memory of the dead. The memory of the dead With time, victims of catastrophes of this magnitude unavoidably become—except for their family—figures in statistics or files in a trial. My project focuses on each one of the eighty-five persons who were murdered and their relatives. The idea for this work came up months before the sixth anniversary of the bombing. At the beginning of that year I finally worked out how to approach this series in terms of photography, and shortly after I began taking the first images. I decided to work with diptychs, trying to create one for each case. The diptychs are formed by a portrait of a relative of the victim and a second photograph corresponding to an object. This object is something the person had with him or her on the day of the bombing at the time of death, or else, an object that was representative of that person when he or she was alive. The idea behind the diptychs is related to the underlying theme of this work: To represent the memory of the victims through their possessions, and to embody a demand for justice, giving it a visible and concrete face through the portraits of their relatives. I am taking each photograph in black and white, in medium and large formats, using a white background. Through these sober images I aim at providing the entire work with an aesthetic unity, avoiding contexts and focusing on gestures, on textures and on absence. Argentina’s recent history has been regretfully and unquestionably characterized by one thing: impunity. The military responsible for the disappearance of thirty thousand people during the last government are in fact free. It is still not known who were the material and intellectual authors of the bombing of the Israeli embassy on March 17 1992, where 23 people lost their lives. The list goes on and is overwhelmingly long. In this context it becomes essential to preserve the memory of the dead and to renew the demand for justice. This is the aim of this project. When I first started to publish the ZoneZero website nine years ago, one of the primordial questions that I was asked, was: “will my photographs be safe on the Internet”? Since that time, all photographers who have asked me that question, have received the same candid response: there is only one way, I know of, to protect yourself 100% against someone misusing any image, do not publish at all and that includes all media, not only electronic. From my personal experience, it turns out that the only images that have been used without my permission have been taken from printed pages (books or magazines), not electronic media. In a bit of peculiar irony, it has been thanks to the Internet that people who saw them published somewhere “out of place”, informed me of what was going on. The electronic medium has made it possible for a larger audience, world wide, to be aware of whose images belong to whom.

The Romanian Holocaust  Popular

Introduction to the Romania Holocaust The tragedy of the Romanian Jewry remains one of the most neglected chapters in the history of the Holocaust. This web page will examine the suffering Romanian Jews faced during WWII to illuminate the reasons for the tragedies that individuals went through, many not surviving. The main reason used by Romanian officials when killing Jews was the belief that they would ally with the Soviet Union and become spies. Thus not only did communists have to be killed, but Jews as well. However, oppression and killing also took place for the same beliefs held by Hitler. Jews were seen as inferior creatures that polluted society, however the latter reason played a more minor role. In the Old Romania, in the territory without the lost provinces, Jews were hardly affected by the war. However, the story is quite different East of the Prut River. No country, with the exception of Germany, was involved in massacres of Jews on such a large scale. (The Destruction of the European Jews, pg. 759) “There were also instances when the Germans actually had to step in to restrain and slow down the pace of the Romanian measures. At such times the Romanians were moving too fast for the German bureaucracy.” (The Destruction of the European Jews, pg. 759) Methods used to wipe out large number of Jews did not include gas camps or other methods use in Nazi Germany, but more primitive practices such as suffocation, starvation, and hanging. This web page will examine first the racist policies before the Holocaust started, to see how Jews were treated before the start of WWII. Then it will focus on the mass killings that took place in Iasi, Bessarabia, Bukovina and Transnistria to show why and how Jews were killed and who is to blame.

Over the past year, we have been collecting the stories of inmates, correctional officers, lawyers, judges, parole officers, parents, victims, and others whose lives have been affected by the criminal justice system. In tandem with a new series on National Public Radio, Prison Diaries, we've conducted interviews and given inmates and officers tape recorders so they could keep audio diaries of their experiences in prison. Each story is focused around a specific case and is told from the perspectives of the people involved. As you listen to the stories, you can explore each speaker's personal space by navigating 360 degrees-up, down, and around-prison cells, offices, judges' chambers, and living rooms. To address many of the issues affecting our nation's growing prison population, we will add new stories throughout the year. Be sure to bookmark this site and come back often.
