Cold War-era films, Elvis movie added to U.S. archive

WASHINGTON (AP) - Films teaching Cold War children to "duck and cover" and describing how Oskar Schindler saved thousands of Jews from the Holocaust are being added to the National Film Registry. Also being preserved: Elvis Presley and Rin Tin Tin.
They are among 25 films selected by the Library of Congress to the registry, which now holds 400 pictures.
Also on this year's list: movies starring Popeye the Sailor Man, Our Gang, Ginger Rodgers and Fred Astaire.
Librarian of Congress James H. Billington made the selections after evaluating nearly 1,000 titles nominated by the public and consulting staff and advisers, the library said.
"The films we choose are not necessarily the 'best' American films ever made or the most famous," Billington said in a statement. Rather, they are chosen because they have "cultural, historical or aesthetic significance."
A film's selection recognizes its place in American film and cultural history, he said.
"The registry stands among the finest summations of American cinema's wondrous first century."
This year's selections span a wide cinematic range and include both obscure and well-known movies. Among the better-known films:
-"Ben Hur," the 1959 epic starring Charlton Heston, which tells the story of a Jewish prince who is betrayed and sent into slavery by a Roman friend, only to regain his freedom and come back for revenge. Its centerpiece: an action-packed chariot race.
-"Duck and Cover," the 1951 landmark civil defense film seen by millions of schoolchildren in the 1950s. In the case of an atomic attack, children were advised to duck beneath a table or desk and cover their heads.

El viernes, en la portada del rotativo The New York Times, una fotografía mostraba a varios iraquís contemplando dos pantallas de televisión en las que aparecía el rostro desfigurado del cadáver de Qusai Husein. El diario, que en páginas interiores colocó cuatro pequeños retratos de Qusai y su hermano Udai vivos y muertos, optaba así por una solución salomónica en un asunto que ha provocado la polémica en EEUU: ¿deben usarse esas imágenes?
Todos los medios, tanto televisiones como periódicos y sus páginas en internet, lo han hecho. Algunos de ellos han sido muy explícitos y han empleado tanto material fotográfico como las imágenes de vídeo de los cadáveres retocados. Otros alertaban sobre su contenido.

Dadas las circustancias, reproducimos esta noticia publicada el 10 de marzo de 2003. EFE:
Pese al revés que esto puede suponer para la credibilidad de EEUU, Washington sigue sus esfuerzos para obtener el apoyo de la comunidad internacional e insiste en que hay que mantenerse en alerta frente al régimen de Bagdad.
La admisión de EEUU llega en medio de una intensa actividad diplomática de Washington para convencer a los miembros del Consejo de Seguridad para que respalden un proyecto de resolución que abre la posibilidad de un ataque armado contra Irak, propuesta que podría someter a votación en dicho órgano de la ONU mañana, martes.

WASHINGTON, D.C. The National Security Archive at George Washington
University today published on the World Wide Web documents concerned with an
early Cold War campaign to win hearts and minds in the Middle East, launched
50 years before current efforts to achieve United States “public diplomacy
goals in the region.
Soon after the events of September 11, the administration of George W. Bush
announced a wide-ranging campaign to improve the image of America in Arab
countries and in the greater Muslim world. One year later, its results appear
unimpressive: a recent Pew Research Center poll found increasingly unfavorable
international views of the U.S., "most dramatically, in Muslim societies."
