Texts Without Context
By MICHIKO KAKUTANI
In his deliberately provocative — and deeply nihilistic — new book, “Reality Hunger,” the onetime novelist David Shields asserts that fiction “has never seemed less central to the culture’s sense of itself.” He says he’s “bored by out-and-out fabrication, by myself and others; bored by invented plots and invented characters” and much more interested in confession and “reality-based art.” His own book can be taken as Exhibit A in what he calls “recombinant” or appropriation art.
Mr. Shields’s book consists of 618 fragments, including hundreds of quotations taken from other writers like Philip Roth, Joan Didion and Saul Bellow — quotations that Mr. Shields, 53, has taken out of context and in some cases, he says, “also revised, at least a little — for the sake of compression, consistency or whim.” He only acknowledges the source of these quotations in an appendix, which he says his publishers’ lawyers insisted he add.
“Who owns the words?” Mr. Shields asks in a passage that is itself an unacknowledged reworking of remarks by the cyberpunk author William Gibson. “Who owns the music and the rest of our culture? We do — all of us — though not all of us know it yet. Reality cannot be copyrighted.”

Walid Raad presenta su visión de la guerra civil del Líbano

* El artista estará en el Reina Sofía el miércoles y el jueves
* Presentará su trabajo 'The loudest muttering is over'

Art
By DOROTHY SPEARS
MATT MULLICAN loves to scribble. “This is my studio,” he said on a recent morning, gesturing around the fluorescent-lighted space in Lower Manhattan that serves as a workshop, office, storage room and clearinghouse for his artwork. “But I don’t really work here. My studio is in my notebook, and where I travel.”
As if to prove the point, he plucked a sketchbook off a metal bookshelf and opened it.
A Christmas gift from his parents dated Dec. 26, 1970, it was filled in a single day by Mr. Mullican, now 57, when he was still a high school senior. A miniature tour of Pop Art history, it is strikingly precocious.

Correction Appended
MONS, Belgium — On a fog-drizzled Monday afternoon, this fading medieval city feels like a forgotten place. Apart from the obligatory Gothic cathedral, there is not much to see here except for a tiny storefront museum called the Mundaneum, tucked down a narrow street in the northeast corner of town. It feels like a fittingly secluded home for the legacy of one of technology’s lost pioneers: Paul Otlet.
In 1934, Otlet sketched out plans for a global network of computers (or “electric telescopes,” as he called them) that would allow people to search and browse through millions of interlinked documents, images, audio and video files. He described how people would use the devices to send messages to one another, share files and even congregate in online social networks. He called the whole thing a “réseau,” which might be translated as “network” — or arguably, “web.”

A documentary about Paul Otlet, often considered the father of information management, narrated by W. Boyd Rayward, his biographer.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s Otlet pioneered the field of what we today call information science, but what he called documentation. A hundred years before the development of the Internet, Otlet used terms like web of knowledge, link, and knowledge network to describe his vision for a central repository of all human knowledge.
In English and French. Produced for Dutch television in 1998.

Apparatus and voice
Jorge Blasco Gallardo
In this context, Ruta Baciulyte and Ruta Gostautiene suggested a specific weaving pattern named “ruta” (Ruta / rue) that refers to a perennial plant having a strong, heavy odour and a bitter taste; also known as a ‘herb of grace’. In Lithuania, this pattern was imbued with different meanings, such that over the course of time it has as well routed through gardens and common language to become an icon representing virginity and femininity, despite the reputed efficiency of the plant in inducing abortions.

Nomeda & Gediminas Urbonas, Ruta Remake, 2002, Installation View, Secession 2003
Apparatus, tool, instrument
Ruta Remake is a comprehensive process involving the gathering and organisation of what has been collected. Yet that collection is inevitably contemporary, hybrid, impure and mixed. Collection is made of voices, vestiges of tradition, and they are composed in accordance with a pattern defined by the very plant that lends its name to the title of the work, a pattern whereby different levels of voice will be interwoven to form a fully meaningful song. It is not just any pattern, nor so the different songs forthcoming, it is a pattern stemming from a tradition that has framed a space for the muting of women’s voices that understands the weaving as writing, that is followed by singing as way of story telling.
The organisation of what has been collected, in principle, has nothing in common with the standard features of a “scientific? study and they all have something to do with banishment/detachment from one’s own close reality. The objectified outcome of Ruta Remake is an apparatus, an electronic instrument, the Theramidi.

14/03/2008 - 15/06/2008 MACBA
[Plaça dels Àngels, 1 08001 Barcelona 93 412 08 10]
Curator: Bartomeu Marí

Produced by: Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA)
The work of Nomeda and Gediminas Urbonas –born in Lithuania in 1968 and 1966 respectively– takes the form of projects in which they explore the conflicts and contradictions thrown up by the new economic, social and political conditions in the former Soviet countries as they affect everyday life, management of public spaces and the idea of the nation. This exhibition features five installations, the results from their work over the last eight years: Transaction (2000-2004), Ruta Remake (2002-2004), Druzba (2003 - ongoing), Pro-test Lab (2005 - ongoing) and Villa Lituania (2007).
A particularly notable characteristic of their work is that each project is born and develops as part of a process involving cooperation with groups and experts from other fields (such as music, architecture or psychiatry). This method results in one of the principal features of their work formally: the absence of a recognisable style or authorship. Another element these projects all share is the inclusion, at some point or other in the process, of a film archive to show how the models used to control society are constructed.

When cleaning a house for somebody with whom you only communicate through little notes... a space might open up in which you create an image of your employers, their lives, their way of living. Hristina Tasheva worked as a cleaner for many years, and reflects upon her situation, dreams and future perspectives. She starts photographing the houses she is taking care of and develops a new relationship to the job, escaping from an invisible life. Suzanne Raes is documentary-maker and former employer of Hristina. We speak with them about how they developed the documentary, and how their lives have changed since.
