Lectures and workshop: Archive Cultures

The warehouses of the museums, the archives in general, are visited by
investigators and commissioners looking for documents that illustrate
what exhibition they develop wants to narrate. But those structures -
archive, stores, etc.- already narrate something. The workshop
proposes its participants to approach without a preconceived discourse
to documentary groups. That cultural heritage is not the image that
illustrates the pretext, is the pretext of participants own work to
elaborate their own project.

The workshop:

1. - To describe the project as included in a genealogy of scientists,
managers and artists who have used these strategies as support. The way
in which usually exhibition removes documents and object from archives
and warehouses, the ideological implications of this act and the
possible alternatives to the habitual tendency.

2. - To describe the birth of the project, and his structure as a
project in course that, at the moment, receives orders of institutions
to exhibit its cultural files according with the project's concept.

3. - To describe the structure of team of independent professionals
united in each edition of the project and how they work.

4. - To analyze the material edited by the project: bulletins, books
and last and future productions.

5. - To describe relation of the project with Internet and free
software collaborating with the artist Daniel G. Andújar.

The fundamental point of discussion in the workshop is election and
detection of possible spaces of collaboration in Trondheim, since the
participants are the main judges of their surroundings, as well as the
justification of that decision which is fundamental for the development
of the workshop.

Afterwords, a project based on the material selected from local archives
is to be done.
The resultant material will be suitable to be consulted in a reference
table, so that it can be donated to collaborating institutions as
future consult material.

Archive Cultures was created in the Antoni Tàpies Foundation in the
autumn of 2000. As an exhibition medium and setting, it falls within a
historiographic approach in which a large part of the systems that
organize images and texts share a common genealogy. One in which the
theatres and palaces of memory, the curiosity displays, the first
science exhibitions, the earliest photographs salons, propagandistic
manifestations and the recent depictions of the holocaust (and other
tragedies linked to repression) are constantly crossing the line drawn
between archive and exhibition.

Nonetheless, its point of departure lies not so much in that genealogy
as in the influence that 20th century artists and narrators have had on
the archive and in the light these contributions have shed on a way of storing information, of constructing memory and organising reality that has undoubtedly left its mark on our cultural and social sphere. Archive cultures displays documentary
groups, fragments of archives arranged and posted on the wall. Whereas
standard practice involves documents being removed from their setting
to be contextualised within a historical, scientific, didactic or
propagandistic discourse, the documents in this montage are here on
display in order to relate to other documents:
each documentary group is contextualised amongst its peers constituting
a visible manifestation of the human penchant for depicting, recording,
cataloguing, filing and collecting reality and, therefore, for
constructing a view of itself.

It provides various possible approaches to this tendency that
illustrates reality as much as it contributes to shaping it, whether it
is through direct intervention as a instrument of segregation or
purging, or constructing and structuring a view of the same.

The project Archive Cultures is developed through different supports
that include the assembly of archive-spaces, rooms of reference
workshops, seminars and multiple colaboration as well as different
means of edition, both paper and media-works.

Further information can be found in www.culturasdearchivo.org

Throughout that the project has become an tool for different cultural
agents and institutions who collaborate with the project when
understanding it like a common space of collaboration and not like and
external intromision or imposition of the well- known structure of the
exhibition or cultural event that illustrates a pre-existing didactical
or historical pre-text drawn by curators and others.

Archive Cultures is not a project that works on archives or on
documentary groups, is a project that works and collaborates with
archives, archivist and others trying to define this 'archive culture'
that is in the basis of our contemporary culture and in which we all
are involved.

The project settles in a zone or geographical area and the first step
that it takes is to make contact with the different cultural agents
from the zone. That process of creation of a workspace noninvasive and
based on the interchange of tools and possibilities has become one of
the central points of a project that couldn't exist without the
archives, collections and institutions with which collaborates nor
without that researchers who work in them for years, studying the
documentary groups that are to be included in the project.
The project gives visibility to archive heritage, and that heritage
allow us to continue with our task of defining what this "archive
culture" means.

As far as collaborating with artists, is tried that their projects and
creations are integrated in the project at the same level than the
other groups of images and texts that participate in Archive Cultures.
They are integrated as creators of 'author' databases, files and
archives.

Archive Cultures develops a series of workshops from 2003 in the
Politechnical University of Catalonia, in concrete in the Superior
School of Architecture, Barcelona. These workshops are oriented, not as
much to the contents of the project, as to its strategy of
collaboration and creation of networks between institutions,
individuals and the project it self.

The project has counted until now with collaboration of the Fundació
Antoni Tápies (Barcelona), Universitat de València (València),
University of Salamanca (Salamanca), Junta de Castilla y León, and
Ministry of Culture (Spain).
